Biografia

Nasce in provincia di Genova. Il padre, sindacalista e componente attivo nella 'Federazione dei Marittimi', originario di Santo Stefano Quisquina, piccolo borgo in provincia di Agrigento, è costretto dal regime fascista a lasciare la Liguria per tornare in Sicilia. La madre è Natalia Donnini Attardi[1]. Trasferitosi insieme alla famiglia a Palermo, incuriosito dalla pittura e dalle sue tecniche, fin da piccolo (nel tempo libero aiutava lo zio paterno, vecchio pittore di ritratti e paesaggi) inizia a frequentare l'Accademia di Belle Arti e successivamente la facoltà di Architettura. Nel 1945 si trasferisce a Roma, ospitato da Pietro Consagra, a sua volta ospite di Renato Guttuso. Il clima ricco di iniziative culturali e civili del dopoguerra gli consente di riprendere con slancio la propria ricerca. Con alcuni giovani artisti, nel 1948, costituisce il movimento Forma Uno, di orientamento astratto, maturando tuttavia visioni divergenti rispetto al resto del gruppo. I suoi compagni erano Carla Accardi, Antonio Sanfilippo, Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Concetto Maugeri, Achille Perilli e Giulio Turcato. Nel 2006 ha ricevuto dal Presidente Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, il titolo di Grande Ufficiale della Repubblica, per i suoi meriti artistici e per aver saputo diffondere e valorizzare in tutto il mondo il genio e la creatività italiani. Si spegne al Policlinico Gemelli di Roma a 83 anni.

It was born in the province of Genoa. The father, a trade unionist and active member of the 'Federation of Seafarers', originally from Santo Stefano Quisquina, a small village in the province of Agrigento, was forced by the fascist regime to leave Liguria to return to Sicily. The mother is Natalia Donnini Attardi [1]. He moved with his family to Palermo, intrigued by painting and its techniques, from an early age (in his spare time he helped his paternal uncle, an old portrait and landscape painter) he began to attend the Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently the Faculty of Architecture. In 1945 he moved to Rome, hosted by Pietro Consagra, himself a guest of Renato Guttuso. The climate rich in post-war cultural and civil initiatives allows him to resume his research with enthusiasm. With some young artists, in 1948, he formed the Forma Uno movement, of abstract orientation, however maturing divergent visions from the rest of the group. His companions were Carla Accardi, Antonio Sanfilippo, Pietro Consagra, Piero Dorazio, Mino Guerrini, Concepts Maugeri, Achille Perilli and Giulio Turcato. In 2006 he received from the President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi, the title of Grand Official of the Republic, for his artistic merits and for having known how to spread and enhance the Italian genius and creativity all over the world. He dies at the Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome at the age of 83.
